How To Make A Fitted Sheet
Making your own fitted sheet can be a fun creative project. It also allows you to customize the size color fabric to match your specific needs preferences. In this article we’ll walk you through step by step on how to make a fitted sheet.
Materials Needed
Before we start here are the materials you will need:
- Fabric
- Elastic
- Pins
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine
- Measuring Tape
- Ruler
Step 1: Determine the Measurements
To start you first need to measure the size of your mattress. Measure the length width depth of your mattress. Add 1 inch to the length width measurements to give you seam allowances.
Step 2: Cut the Fabric
Next cut the fabric to the measurements you took in step 1. Cut a rectangle of fabric that is the length width of the mattress add an extra 1 inch seam allowance.
Step 3: Create the Corners
Fold each corner of the fabric to create a right angle with the wrong side of the fabric facing out. Pin sew across the corner making sure to leave a 1/4-inch seam allowance. This will create a boxed corner.
Step 4: Attach the Elastic
Measure a piece of elastic that is the length of the mattress’s width plus 2 inches. Pin the elastic to the fabric about 1/2 inch from the edge stretch it slightly as you sew it in place. Repeat for the other end of the fitted sheet.
Step 5: Sew the Sides
Next sew the sides of the fitted sheet leaving a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Start with the elastic sides making sure to sew over the elastic to strengthen the seam.
Step 6: Try on the Fitted Sheet
Once you have sewn both sides try on the fitted sheet to make sure it fits snugly on the mattress. If it is a bit loose adjust the elastic to fit tighter.
Step 7: Hem the Edges
Lastly hem the edges of the fitted sheet by folding under the raw edge about 1/4 inch sewing it with a straight stitch.
Congratulations you have now made your own fitted sheet! With some practice you can make multiple sheets in different fabrics colors to match your bedding decor.
