When Is Men’s Mental Health Month?
Introduction
Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall health wellbeing. However men have traditionally been seen as less likely to discuss their mental health concerns seek help. To address this issue Men’s Mental Health Month was established to raise awareness about the challenges that men face in regards to their mental health.
History
Men’s Mental Health Month originated in the United States in 1994 when the Men’s Health Network designated June as Men’s Health Month. The goal of this month was to raise awareness about men’s health issues including mental health. By 2003 Men’s Health Month had expanded to include International Men’s Health Week which is celebrated annually in the week leading up to Father’s Day.
Purpose
The purpose of Men’s Mental Health Month is to raise awareness about the unique challenges that men face when it comes to their mental health. Although men experience many of the same mental health issues as women such as depression anxiety they may be less likely to seek help due to social cultural stigmas surrounding masculinity. Men may feel that it is not “manly” to discuss their feelings or seek professional help which can lead to long-term mental health problems.
Activities
There are several ways that people can participate in Men’s Mental Health Month. Mental health organizations may organize events or programs to raise awareness about men’s mental health issues. Clinical psychologists may also offer counseling sessions or support groups specifically geared towards men. In addition you can show your support for men’s mental health by wearing a blue ribbon which is recognized as the symbol for Men’s Health Month.
Conclusion
Men’s Mental Health Month is an important initiative that aims to raise awareness about the unique challenges that men face when it comes to their mental health. By promoting open discussion about men’s mental health concerns we can break down stigmas encourage men to seek the help that they need to achieve full healthy lives. By wearing a blue ribbon supporting mental health organizations we can all make a difference in the lives of men who are struggling with mental health issues.
